OAP?
« on: February 20, 2008, 20:09 »
Hi everyone. One of our hens "Miss Attitude" seems very under the weather. She keeps herself away from the others most of the time, doesnt try to run away when I pick her up.....most unusual, and she seems to have lost weight, though her feathers are beautiful and thick and very glossy. To what age do chickens usually get to, and anyone any ideas of things to try to ascertain what is wrong with her. We have had her for two years now, and our friends had her for at least a year before that, though Im not entirely sure how long.

Thanks folks!

Mary.

Old age in chickens is very variable.  If she is getting thinner but is eating then she is obviously not absorbing nutrients well.  If she is a 3-4 year old egg laying machine then seh may be at the end of her life Some pure breds who lay far fewer eggs can live for 7+ years.

When you pick her up to inspect her dose she seem to have a bloated tummy (below the vent).  This could indicate internal problems such as egg peritonitis.

Do let us know how she is !
