Garlic
« on: June 01, 2020, 16:36 »
Afternoon growers

I planted 2 types of autumn soft neck garlic on new years eve (bit late I know).
One type has thick stems and is still upright and green.  The other type has very thin stems and whilst still green, has completely collapsed.  The bulbs are perfectly formed but slightly on the small size.
Could they nearly be ready to be lifted?
Thanks, Jack

With the dry, warm spring we've had, the collapsing ones are probably nearly ready to lift, leave the leaves until they go yellow and wither, then loosen the soil around the bulbs a bit to help them dry a bit more before lifting.
Obviously the green stemmed one still needs a bit longer....

Thanks

Should I still be watering the green ones for a bit?

I've read conflicting advice on when to stop watering.  I haven't watered either of these for a few weeks now.

I don't know where you live, (it helps if you put a location/county in your profile :) ) but here we're forecast some rain towards the end of the week anyway, so wouldn't bother with watering them now, if your forecast is similar.
