Tomato pruning before planting out?
« on: May 11, 2020, 10:43 »
Hi, I have some Sungold, Pink Bradywine and Green Zebra tomato plants growing in 12cm pots. With the excellent weather we've been having many are 30cm or more high and putting out their first truss of flowers. I will plant them out into the greenhouse soil late May/early June, but until then does anyone have any advice about whether it would be best to remove the flower trusses until they are planted out or not?

Thanks

Not sure where his location is, but mine are coming back indoors at night from the greenhouse until Thursday at least.
Our overnight temperature last night was 2 degrees and 1 forecast for tonight here in Yorkshire.  Far too cold for tomatoes at night here.

I wouldn't remove flower trusses myself.

You probably need to get them somewhere permanently soon as one ft high in a 4" pot is beginning to push them a bit...

As Aunt Sally says, can they go in the GH now, if you're using a border which is going free?

Wouldn't worry about the flowers, as you can bury the roots quite deep to get them to sprout more little side roots underground! You often see them in GCs with flower buds on them, quite low down!

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I'm in N Yorkshire so no way can they go out for a while. It's forcast -1c tonight and low single figures for a while, so an unheated GH isn't enough to help with that. Right at the end of May maybe but probably early June is safer. So I'll just have to see what happens when the bigger ones go in.
