Kohlrabi
« on: February 27, 2020, 08:51 »

I saw a post where someone recommended growing kohlrabi for use in salads and stir fry so thought I might try some. I was wondering if I could sow it into modules and then plant out when the weather warms a little. I thought maybe sowing two seeds per 5cm pot and nipping out to one plant only when they germinate. Might be a good way to give them a head start?

I sow mine into 2 cm plug trays and pop them out into their place when they're a couple of inches tall. Works every time.

Mine, like all my brassicas, get started off in modules.

One of the most under-rated veg around! I love them!

Hopefully, you'll get them going very quickly down where you are, as I reckon they need speed to expand, and lots of moisture too.

Lucky you!

I hope to get some going very soon although I have had to send off for seed as the local shops don't seem to have any. I do worry though as to when it gets hotter in mid May and into June do they bolt if they got too hot? I don't think they will go into July and August it gets really hot then 33C plus is very common and sometimes way hotter ... 43C for about a week last year! I have my beds ready with auto watering now so keeping them watered should not pose a problem. We are looking forward to trying them we have seen some very nice salad ideas using them.

I've never had mine bolt, though I do tend to harvest them quite small as they're tender enough to eat raw.
You could grow them amongst your bigger brassicas so they receive some  extra shade during the hottest parts of the summer.

Sounds like a plan, Jambop!

And you can add a Celeriac Remoulade to the menu, which is something we found on French buffets, and have never forgotten!

Right - that's it, I'm off to get some seed and also buy just one celeriac which will last us for ages...
