We got one of the big bins a few years ago but couldn't get the compost to heat up on its own.

If I knew hwo to get it working, I'd have another. Any tips ?

We have a LOT of grass clippings and a fair few veggie peelings.
Would the chicken poo with wood shavings be any good ?

Rob

.... and turn it every couple of weeks. Daleks seem to work very quickliy once the weather warms up . Introducing a bit of air gets yer microbes moving again. Try saving your waste and building the heap all in one go, it gives it a much better chance to heat up. Chopping your waste up fairly fine helps too.

It's a bit late in the day now, what with the seed-sowing time of year almost upon us, but moving them into the greenhouse over winter keeps them warm enough to continue working. A couple of layers of bubble wrap helps prevent the temperature from dropping too much.

if u r finding these expensive or unavailable, try using a relatives postcode in a diff county, u will have to get it delivered there but its cheaper.
mine are £13 in nelincs, but in lincs proper £9 with the online discount where my parents live.

If you are thinking about purchasing one of these, and have not done so yet, I suggest you check whether this offer will still be available after 31st March, because this offer may 'dissapear' (due to loss of this year's subsidy -possibly doubling the price?).

I ordered one about a month ago and it finally arrived...on Sunday evening

And I have now discovered that it doesn't fit in my car so I can't get it down to lottie yet either

Really good prices - mine has the flap at the bottom and I got a free kitchen container too.

Ours have gone up from £8 to £20 as we lost the subsidy.  Don't think our council is bothered as I enquired about the reason for the big price hike but go no response

All the plots on our allotment are supplied, free of charge, with a dalek type compost bin.  I asked around and apparently there was one on the plot but obviously someone nobbled it.  I rang the council and told them we were deprived because we didn't have a bin.  That was Monday.  Arrived Friday :)FREE OF CHARGE    and with our plot number stenciled on it.
