Cheap rootrainers
« on: July 23, 2010, 23:19 »
Was in the Ashford (Kent) Wilkos today and they had rootrainers at 75% off - got two for £4!  Don't know if this is just a local thing though - it may be they bought some to see how they'd go and the gardeners of Ashford weren't interested...

Big, strong, healthy, evenly distributed seedlings, Learner. We 've started using them this year and now need to build up a stock. Wish we had a Wilko. :(

I use the long roottrainers to start my beetroot off, i like the trainers but not at full price. :)
Well worth buying at the price Sarah paid.

I use toilet roll innards -- not smart but free.

£4 for two does sound fairly cheap though  :)

I did sweet peas in toilet role tubes this year. One full wrap of selotape and pack them into an old cardboard salad box from the supermarket. Left out in all weathers they came up a treat. Cost one strip of tape !

It's not just the depth (though these are 5"), it's also the fact the sides are grooved - this is supposed to stop the roots circling and send them straight downwards.  It's also easier to get the plugs out because they're hinged, so the 'pots' open up.  I've used them before, and they do work really well, but they're so flimsy for what they cost.  As 8doubles says, I like them, but not at the usual price.  :)

Not on an early retirement pension it isn't!  ::)

8doubles I find my beetroot does really well sown in mini-cell modules. 180 sown in one go lets me plant out in batches over several weeks with the last lot staying well in the tiny cells (providing they are watered regularly) until they are needed up to six weeks later.  ;)

Hi Learner, i have used the mini cells as well but the rootrainer does give them a bit more root space and not send the roots around in circles. I have used the rannoch 50 cell pack for years till the cell hinges have worn out.
I expect Sarah`s ones were 32 cell packs but at £4 for two it is well worth dipping into the gardening piggy bank.

For toilet roll innerds; you can get the same 'downwards effect' if you fold them.

First, flatten them, then unflatten them and flatten the other way - making a square. Then fold each side of the square the other way [inwards] to make a star shape.

This helps to drive the roots downwards, and also means no gaps or sellotape needed when putting them into a seed tray, as they fit together nicely and take up the full space.

You can also just keep them as squares, and use in square pots to separate the spaces, as per the post on here
http://linearlegume.blogspot.com/2009/04/using-loo-roll-insides.html

And check out the first photo of how to store them over winter.....
