Apples rotting on the branch...
« on: August 04, 2017, 20:15 »
After a reasonably small 'June Drop', our Lord Lambourne apples are going brown, rotting away and falling off at an alarming rate.

There'll be enough left for us both, but not a lot of spares for chums; so, are there any reasons for this? It's never happened before!

I believe much of it is down to aphid damage when the fruit was small .
You do not see the little holes the aphid leave but they are big enough to give the brown rot spores a hold. :(

Sounds like brown rot to me, a fungal disease.  We had it on our cooking apple (variety unknown) at the allotment about 3 hears ago.  We cleared away all the rotten fruit and it recovered well last year.

Here is what the RHS has to say about it.

That's the problem Anne, thank you!

I've been taking the diseased fruit off, but certainly not burying them! We didn't get a single pear either, and recall the blossom looking a bit sick about then, and it seems the two conditions are related.

I put it down to that late frost, but wasn't sure about that either!

Hey ho, we live in Kent, so it'll not be all bad!

Thanks also 8 and Ghost, we've never sprayed them so may have to next year.
