branch at the end of a flowering tomato truss
« on: June 15, 2013, 13:56 »
i was a bit confused this morning when i noticed that one of the flowering truss's on one of my tomato plants has a branch growing at the end of it.

so the truss has grown from the stem as usual. then the end of the truss furthest away from the stem had a branch with growth tip growing on it.

is this usual?

am i doing something wrong to make it do this?

i cut the branch part off and left the flowers, i'm hoping this was the right thing to do. it's done now anyway if it's not.

They often grow a spray of leaves at the end of a flower truss.

Leave it or chop it off, it's not a problem  ;)

I usually just chop them off.

I chop them off as it tends to end up dragging the truss down if it gets too big.  Also, I wonder if it slows down the growth/ripening of the tomatoes, though no evidence for this!

excellent. thank you all for the replies.

my theory was that would use energy from the plant that i would rather be used in the growth upwards or the fruit. but then again i don't know a lot yet.

thanks again
