Woolworths selling asparagus at £1 a plant
« on: January 28, 2008, 12:24 »
Apologies if its been mentioned before..

I know nowt about asparagus - these plants have a root in a bag and the ones I bought are sprouting away and very green - over a foot tall with curly bits etc.

they look healthy to me and they had loads on the shelves along with a nice pink flowering bush [sorry no idea what it was called] and mini-bamboo and seeds at 2 for the price of one [herbs, veg , flowers etc - different varieties to lidls]

Asparagus advice welcome as Ive no idea what I'm doing

I might be wrong, but I wouldn't have got the root with lots of green growing now.  It's been kept too warm so has started to grow when you don't want it to just yet.  The ones in the ground won't be making an appearance until late March at the least.  I don't know what to suggest.

Oh well - I can just stick it in the garden and maybe it will look attractive if nothing else?

Bung it in - you never know.
Wilkos are doing globe artichokes at £2 for 3 at the moment.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

They are just shooting in that incubator packaging, Lou. Get it off, keep them moist, cool them down and then plant.

No, in a cool room/shed for a week, so they get a bit used to. Keep the roots moist.
