I brought a one year old Asparagus crown  at the end of last summer ,i just left it in the small pot and cut it back when it dies off.
how do i plant it please??

ive been told to did a trench and not fill it in .put the plant is only small is this right??? because i want to plant it soon, and how much room will one crown need,i plan  to get more,when i see them cheap from my local seller on e bay,
any tips ,thank you

Same as me last year....

... dug a trench with a curved bottom so that the middle of the trench was higher than by the walls of the trench... spaced out the crowns.. fanned the roots out and covered with about 3 " of soil


sat and waited.. waited... waited..

... but eventually all of them had at least one or two spears appear and I back filled the soil as they grew... just got to sit out one more year before I'll take any

I'll be making my Asparagus beds this weekend ready for the arrival of 20 plants in the next few weeks.  This should give me time to get most of the weeds out too.

How will I manage to weed the Asparagus bed this summer if the soil is so thin and the shoots are so close to the surface?

i think it helps if you create a bed thats weed free to start with, and you should be able to hand weed any weeds that float in.

you have to get rid of all the perennial (sp) weeds before planting... remove all bindweed couch grass etc the as poorstudent says you have to hand weed anything that arrives

I know.  It seems a bit extravagant but I have a big plot & a half.  Half of the bed will be an early variety so I should have a decent longish season in a few years.

Hand weeding asparagus isn't a problem if you check out the bed everytime you're at the plot. The weeds will be small and a few minutes of picking out will do the job. Far better and easier than if you let the weeds go for a few weeks.
For those with shallow soil depth, build up your asparagus bed with wood boards as in raised beds. This puts in more soil which the crowns need for protection. If you mix in compost as well, the nutrients will seep down to the root areas and keep them healthy despite being in substrata junk.
