I must say planting indoor reared runners or climbing french bean seedlings outside in the first week of May is stretching it a bit There's early and there's early :D    I would only do that under a cloche.

I sow direct in the soil at the start of May with the aim for them to break the surface about 10 days later. I've found sowing direct into the ground takes away any issues of shock for climbing beans as our site can be very very windy.

I should have added that I've been putting my indoor-reared runner and French beans out in early to mid May for at least five years. As an insurance, I always sow of few beans around them at the same time just as insurance but they haven't been needed so far

When I had my growing space on an allotment I was often one of the last to plant out runners and French climbing beans... Cautious.

My late planted often caught up eventually although others were sometimes a week earlier than me picking their first harvest.

it's all a matter or skill / judgement / risk / luck....... I guess that's what helps make growing more enjoyable when things go well. :)
