Well, I would always keep these things in an unheated gh in April/May time as I never had a heated one.

There are some differences, for example: diff gh, diff location in same garden, not in pots on shelves, but planted in the ground and so on.

JayG I think my tomatoes are in about the same state as yours.... not yet belting skywards but beginning to need potting on. My lean-to greenhouse is unheated... the free-standing one over the road still has extra ventilation (a few panes broken) so....

.....I may well pot my tomatoes on into 12" pots and not tell Mrs Plots I am standing them in our conservatory until the weather warms up. If I don't mention it there can't be a debate / discussion.... and after all, I should have a bit of space out there in-between the sewing-table and the upholstery storage units / cupboard.

Wish me luck..... that last frost can't be too far off if we get one at all gobs... you just never know.

Sharp ground frost this morning and i think its going to get colder on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Some areas are more vulnerable than others so it may be a bit hit and miss. Potatoes and french beans will need protecting here.

Tip - if you catch ground frost early enough on potatoes it can be be washed off with tepid water without it causing damage. You need to catch just before it starts to burn (freeze) the foliage.

Here's hoping you only get a very light touch.... earth-up and cover up.

Newspaper is useful, grass clippings on top of potatoes if it's hard to earth-up any more.
Best of luck.

Grass mowings or a light cover of compost does the trick..... foliage will grow through again and no need to keep covering and uncovering with fleece or other layers..

I took the precaution of fleecing my spuds in bags and in a bed but they were still frosted last night😱😱
Hopefully that's the end of the frosts down here now😳😳
Cheers HH
Keep digging

Frost wasn't forecast for us last night, but it did, and it got me spuds. Neighbours either side were ok, tut, just how it goes sometimes.

Temperature in both polytunnel and greenhouse dropped to 3C last night but no damage to tomatoes, cucumbers etc. Also French beans planted outside a week ago look unharmed. Next two weeks look changeable but much milder by night so that's maybe the end of frost scares for this season

If we were all afraid of the last possible frost, we would hardly have a window left for some crops like squash and corn.
We clock the seasons, we tickle here and there, lose a few, win a lot. Most years it works, the odd one not quite so well.

I've always thought frost is a headline enemy that is overrated for us small growers.  Far bigger enemies are not hardening off, not protecting against pests and poor soil condition/fertility.

I've been rashly predicting to our allotment committee this evening that there will be no more frosts this spring!

Oh, such a foolish old man.....

Frost or not we've been and gone and done it!

Wall-baskets planted, hanging baskets hung.... French beans in (just a few) and potatoes so high I'd need a step-ladder to lean over to cover them.

But: 1) I'm down south 2) baskets can be moved 3) Emergency plans in place for the potatoes 4) it's almost mid May and the plants need to go out

Here's wishing everyone a frost-free drive through to growing-season proper.

Late frosts have been murdering my climbing beans, I keep on replacing them from the greenhouse but then more frost.  I have almost given up and have planted them in the polytunnel now.

A particularly sharp frost a couple of days back, not only did for the last lot of beans I put out, but it damaged my potatoes and my grape vines. I am not making any assumptions about the frosts being over yet.
