Planting Cider Apple Trees
« on: October 24, 2016, 12:13 »
Hi All!

Ive just bought a couple of Cider Apple Trees off Amazon, a Kingston Black and an Ashton Bitter.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00SOMULSC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Will these be okay to grow in big pots or would this hinder there growth?
If direct planting is recomended are their any tips you can give me other than did a big hole an stick it in?

Keeping them in a pot will hinder growth whether you'll get enough fruit to produce cider Im not sure, a quick gurggle suggests 10Kgs apples to a gallon of juice.  That's asking a lot from a tree in a pot.

Hole in the ground and a stake is always the best method  ;)

Not sure Id be buying trees from Amazon

Thanks for the advice, the Amazon thing was an impulse buy, I only went on to buy a book on growing mushrooms!!

As their eventual anticipated size is 12'14', they're not dwarfing rootstock and therefore not designed to be grown in pots long-term.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for the advice everyone, how far apart should I plant the trees?
They need to be close enough to fruit each other but far enough away as to not hinder growth I guess.....
Would 6 foot be okay??

Apples are insect pollinated so you don't have to worry about them being close enough for wind to blow pollen around. Bee's will carry pollen from all over the place so how close they are doesn't really matter.

If the eventual height is 12-14' they're probably on MM106. Rather than re-invent the wheel http://www.orangepippintrees.co.uk/articles/fruit-tree-spacing-guide I've spent some time looking at the "tall spindle" system for high density planting / copping.
