One year I'll learn....
« on: June 12, 2016, 08:59 »
Last weekend down the plot I ran out of time to put netting over the gooseberries - as the fruits were still small I decided had plenty of time. I went down yesterday and both bushes are stripped by the pigeons for the second year running

I was talking to another plot holder who said that he had delayed getting his chicken mesh barrier up and his corn has been munched by the deer - and that after 7 years here he should have known better.

What other mistakes have you made this year (or last) where you 'should have known better'

Planting too close together! I've been doing it forever. Every year I tell myself to allow more space, but I'm obviously not listening.🙄🙄

Growing far too many plants, and then wedging them into the plot because I can't stand seeing them go to waste.

As this is my first year of veggie gardening, I'm letting myself off the 'should have known better' tag and blaming my mistakes on the fact that I'm a newbie.  ;)
But it's sort of good to know that even some of you old pros can still make mistakes!

Not weeding amongst the fruit bushes until the weeds are knee high and growing up through the gooseberries

Haha, my problem too! Always plan 'just an hour or two' but then seem to find stuff to do that takes all day. Working on that one, need to be more efficient! Also, sow less seed.....much less!!

Going anywhere near reduced or sale banners at the garden centre.  How many rescue plants does a person need  :nowink:

My greatest challenge is yet to come - the August 50p seed sales   I ruthlessly cleared out my seed box last year and swore I would do better this year.  Its full again and I have seed tapes that I haven't even opened yet.  Luckily they are OK for a while yet.

Actually, add freebie mail order offers to that list.  The seed tapes were free, but I ended up buying all sorts of other stuff to get them  ::)

One year I'll learn.....and hopefully i will be on the shoulders of pall bearers, because for me, its what keeps me coming back...year after year after year.
How boring and unfun it would be to get everything right every time!

True... But I would still like some gooseberries (especially as I never see the fruit anywhere!!)

Waitrose and Sainsburys sell gooseberries as does Tesco, Waitrose does the green cooking ones and the red dessert ones. Still much nicer to pick your own crop though. Learnt last year to put the nets up by the end of April; pigeons are very destructive!

We have a huge Waitrose and I have never seen them in there not Sainsbury's sadly. It probably depends on the area/demand or the dreaded online food shop which I refuse to do on principle! I will keep my eyes open though, thanks
