Black bean aphid
« on: June 03, 2016, 20:15 »
Noticed the first infestation of black bean aphid on my beans today here in Lincolnshire. Has anyone else seen any yet?

No. None here.  I do grow Wizard field beans though, rather than standard broad beans.  I think Wizard are hardier and more resistant to pests

Some on a neighbouring plot today. First noticed ants were busy and then inspected closer and saw the aphids.

Not yet, but expecting them any time soon.

Brass syringe at the ready to blast them off.

This is my first year of veggie growing so I have a lot to learn... but I've heard about the dreaded black aphids so I'm keeping a beady eye on my broad beans. No signs of infestation yet - in fact my plants look amazing.
If it happens - is washing up liquid the preferred method?

Or, if they already have enough flowers/beans, pinch out the soft growing tips.

Well I reckon anything that you can wash the plates you eat your food off won't do us any harm, so much better than insecticide which I wouldn't fancy licking my plate clean after it had been washed in it  :)
