Feeding Spring Onions
« on: April 13, 2016, 19:47 »
Hi

I never feed my normal onions or shallots because I know they don't like it (I feed my garlic a lot!).

Not too sure about spring onions though?

I had a crop coming up in late September so I covered them with some debris netting and due to the mild wet winter, they are doing ok - not massive- but mid-sized. So glad they have battled through so now I want to give them a little Spring springy onion boost. Any suggestions? I was just going to sprinkle a bit of BF&B on them? Will it make any difference or will they just one along anyway with a bit of warm weather?

Thanks again in advance...😀

I'm sure BF&B will be fine.  We have foxes wandering through our site, so I don't tend to use it as it encourages them to start digging everywhere.

I fed my over wintered onions, garlic and Wizard beans a couple of weeks ago with chicken manure pellets.  The winter has been so wet I reckoned any nitrogen in the soil would be long washed away and they could do with a boost  :)

I do fed onions garlic shallots and leeks partway through their growing.

I've never done that for spring onions either spring sown or over wintered.  I suppose I've never really thought about it that much.  I just prepare the ground in the normal way which is probably with BFB.   Then I sow into o shallow line of pre-watered bought compost, cover over, tamp down, and off they go

Yes, I feed my onions too -- chicken manure pellets help them along, after the initial BFB. It helps boost their leaves I think, and can help Spring Onions get off to good growth if they are lagging a bit after the Winter
