Spring brassicas doing nothing?
« on: April 15, 2016, 08:55 »
Morning all.
Last October I bought some spring cabbage & cauli plants from B&Q,
brought them home & planted them same day in our small veg plot
in the space where the spuds had been, I even put a net over the top
of them because there was still some cabbage whites about. The ground
had growmore added to it after lifting spuds & was well trodden down
& left for a month ready for these plants going in.
My problem is that they have all grown well but that's it, no sign of any cauli
heads or cabbage hearts. Am I been to eager or is this down to this years
weather? I live in Rotherham & my brother who lives in Hastings planted his
spring cabbage a week before me (outside) started eating his at Christmas.
Any thoughts?

I would think it is too early for cauli heads to be showing. Ones I have grown over the winter in the past headed up in May, so don't give up on them!

There are lots of different varieties of "Spring Cabbage" some of which hears early, some  a bit later and some is collard greens that you cut and eat not hearted. I would give it  a feed of something with plenty of nitrogen in it, such as chicken manure pellets and wait a while to see how they grow.

It will give the caulis a boost after the winter too... just scratch it into the surface of the soil and it will stay good and solid, as this is what they like!!

I have 4 Aalsmeer cauliflowers. One is showing the start of a head the others nothing. My Spring cabbages are starting to grow now but there is no resemblance of anything other than thin Spring greens.
They will show when they are ready. Hopefully not all at once.
