Growing Quinoa?
« on: February 05, 2016, 20:48 »
Hi,

I just wondered if anyone has tried growing quinoa? I fancy it as an experiment, but it sounds like quite a faff to harvest, so I wondered how others might have fared? Can anyone recommend varieties?

Cheers!   :)

One of my plot neighbours grew it the year before last buy barely got enough for a meal out of a whole bed.

Hmm, thanks for that - I wondered how it would do in our climate.

Mind you, I do always like an experiment... Like the ginger last year that never so much as sprouted! :D

Hi Pimento

I grew Quinoa last year with mixed results. I did do a fair bit of research
before having a go, the general advice was that it was easy to grow in the UK,
could grow up to six feet tall and produce one pound of grain per ten plants.
So far so good, however, I did have concerns about harvesting and
processing the grain also.
The variety I grew was Temuco, germination was great but we had cold and windy
weather for what seemed like the whole of spring. I planted thirty plants out
and gave them debris netting protection but they sulked for a long time before
finally growing into four foot bushy plants loaded with flower heads. When dry
and yellowing in Autumn I harvested the plants and had them drying on large
gravel trays in the greenhouse. I grew oats as an experiment last year also and
unfortunately I lost both the oats and quinoa to the rats that moved into my
greenhouse and caused complete mayhem.
I'll have another go this year but I will ,
1. Sow them end of April rather than the beginning.
2. Stake them when planting out, they will fall over if not staked.
3. Rat defenses will be in place before harvesting commences.
Hopefully this year I can get some experience of processing the grain. Best of
luck if you go ahead with it.

Hi Gazza,

Thanks very much for that - really useful.

So sorry to hear about your bad experience after all that hard work!

Good luck this year and I hope you get a great result!

Pim.
