When to sow tomatoes in propagator
« on: February 05, 2016, 14:56 »
Hello everyone, I am quite new and the very first time I write on this forum. Please be gentle with me!
I am wondering when it's the right time to start sowing tomatoes seeds in my propagator?
It is not a heated one, but I keep it on a windowsill that is on a radiator. Normally seed germinates well there and after a few weeks I move them to my conservatory, which is not heated in winter.
Is it too early now or can I start, you reckon? I live in Surrey.
Thanks for your help!

I will be starting some soon, but they are destined for a heated greenhouse where I can maintain a minimum overnight temperature of 10o C.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I assume the site advice is for an average year. This year doesn't feel very average so far.  But I guess past performance is not a reliable indicator of the future...and that is what the tomatoes will care about!

Hi Barlume,

As others have indicated, it depends where you plan to grow the plants. I grow them in an unheated greenhouse and outdoors, so it's still way to early for me to plant.  I usually sow my seeds, like you, in an unheated propagator on a window sill, and I start them off in late March or early April. That gives them plenty of time to grow and be potted on, without becoming too leggy,  before I plant them in their final position towards the end of May.

Good luck!

Pim.

I start mine mid-March usually, and then keep them on a windowsill indoors for a few weeks before they go into the unheated greenhouse in mid-April, if night-time temps in there are around 10C.

mid March for me.  To go out into an unheated greenhouse at end of April or later, depending on the weather.  Even so, most years I have an anxious few days when caught by a cold snap.  I have paraffin heaters, but they don't do much because my greenhouse isn't lined with polythene or bubble wrap.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.
