I've been into the local garden centre which sells loose seed potatoes at about £1.90 a kilo - nice if you just want a few of different sorts. Also as I was an early shopper I got to pick the slightly smaller ones so got more in the bag for the price - took King Edwards, Pink Fir Apple and am trying some Sarpo for the first time.

It may have cost me coppers more but I had the choice of what I wanted and to choose which ones exactly.

I personally did,nt like sarpo, looked very grey when cooked some stayed hard others went mushy. steamed may be better. may be better now as i tried them when they were first developed.

Thing to be aware of is that there are a number of Sarpo varieties now - Sarpo Mira was the first one and it's quite unusual, very dense flesh. It's really good for new ground though, a real thug whose foliage shades out weeds.

Sadly some of the seed producers have had problems so stocks are limited.

I too grew sarpo Mira on a new plot last year, the other plots suffered badly with blight but mine were fine, the taste however in my view isn't the best

Sarpo mira do make nice bakers, with a good crunchy skin.

It's really good for new ground though, a real thug whose foliage shades out weeds.

It certainly is a good spud for less than perfect areas.  I am growing them again this year, on ground where I am clearing old soft fruit that is full of weeds  :)

Slugs find it very difficult to get through the skin of Sapro Mira. In view of another damp & mild winter, it's not just for their blight resistance that I'll be growing them again.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks John, you put me back to track again, the main reason I wanted to grow axon was the depth they can go into to ground in addition to being late main crop and winter storage, no damage by slugs etc.

want axona, better I would catch hold of it from T&M first than waiting to find elswhere :)

Axona are also available from Bridgend Garden Centre if you haven't found them elsewhere. I'm starting to sound like an advert for them. I'll shut up about them now.

snoop seems BGC is reasonable @ 8 potatos for £2.49 , yet to compare with T&M 20 potatos for £6.

delivary is waved of for T&M. my allotment shop spoiled me enough by giving 2.5 kg potatos lot cheaper.

wonder anyone bought seed potatos from T&M?  are they good quality seed potatos?

T&M do have consistent good quality - if you follow the link from the allotment shop it would be helpful as they sponsor the web site

I have to say I find it difficult to get through the skin of Sarpo Mira.

I grew Mira and Axona last year, this year its Axona and Blue Danube (same family but not as blight resistant).

The Axona is more like a normal potato in taste and the ability to boil, skins don't seem as tough but it didn't get bothered by slugs. I can't imagine anything else though beating Mira in producing mammoth sized tubers.
