Jealous face now  :(

I wish I had space to keep more frost free, but I don't, so am trying very hard to just stick to the one lot I have.  They are looking lovely though and have grown so much.  Time for more baby piccies I think  ;)

I have 2 module trays of little elbows, they are very sweet, but they need to have more light. I've got grow lights on the way... :nowink:

Here are mine with their tinfoil reflector removed.

I always sow right on the surface and let them drag themselves down as they wish, so there is a bit of root showing.  This always seems to work better than covering them.  They will sort themselves out and all end up standing up straight if left alone  :)

So far, so good  :)

I read somewhere that lightly brushing the little leaves every day helps the roots strengthen. Wish I could remember where.

I give mine a gentle stroke night and morning in the hope it is right. At least it felts like I am helping them along lol

Varieties: Shimonita, Sturon and Ailsa Craig. Sown 2nd Jan. Sturon & Shimonita well up by 08 Jan. Ailsa Craig a few days later.
Mine are a week behind New Shoot's, looking a bit straggly and floppy.  Still only single leaf but early show'ers are moving past the crook stage.  Now set up on spare room window sill with reflector, so cool and bright but no extra lighting.  Sturon & Ailsa Craig are in deep trays so not intending to pot those on, Shimonita in shallower tray so will probably split those to go into pots next week. Spraying with water to keep soil just damp.

The little chaps are still sitting there, under cloches...

Plenty of chat when I see them, they're not far from the garlic, so somewhere, they have a relative looking after them...

Here are my little darlings. Quite an obvious difference between the Purplette Spring Onions and the Ishikuru. The single ones are the Bedfordshire Champions. At least they are more or less upright!

My Shimonita Spring onions are extremely floppy - don't think they've been upright at all for a week or more!  I know it is a common problem and that they will sort themselves out in time but I still find myself worrying.

Mine are massively floppy. I think only a couple are standing up. Am sticking them in the growlights now for a boost, then they can go out to the greenhouse in the middle of feb if the weather stays like this.

Mine were in tiny seed trays, so were potted into individual small modules yesterday.  They are just getting their second leaves.

I've taken advantage of the mild spell and bunged them out into the small plastic greenhouse inside the main greenhouse.  If need be they can come back in, but that does offer quite a bit of extra protection.

Of course, I immediately sowed a couple of trays of banana shallots to take their place inside  :D

It would not be right to leave that precious windowsill space empty now, wouldn't it?🙆

The usual cause of long and floppy is too warm and/or not enough light

I have on occasions given onions a haircut if they get too long and floppy. Cut them off at about 2 inches and they will stand up. The second leaf then grows straight and stronger and everything is neat and easy to manage.

I have no doubt that some will whince at the thought but it works.

I got this from an website in America where it seems to be usual practice.
