Thank you Sunny, it does just 'feel' the right thing to do right now now...

No it does not!! But we always say go with the weather conditions, not what the book says, so this is one time when "the book" could never have forseen this!

Popped up to the local home/garden shop to pick up an hot water bottle for Mrs B who is battling some virus at the moment - whilst there I spotted that they were selling off (2op a packed) their Italian seeds that they'd had trouble shifting. Picked up 10 packs including the following varieties of onion:
Tonda Musona Bianca
Ramata Di Milano
Borretana
Dorata Di Parma
Rossa  Di Toscana O Verninia

Just need to get the compost warmed up...
If anyone has any advice about these particular varieties I'd be glad to hear...

Pip pip,
Balders

I grew Ramata di Milano last year, and although I had a crop, they didn't fare as well as the Ailsa Craig and Santero that I grew alongside them.   I think they suffered a bit with the cold nights we had.  Perhaps in a warmer summer they would do better.

Time for some baby pics  :)  I still find it amazing that these tiny whisps turn into big round onions

A tinfoil reflector is next on the 'to do' list  ;)

Oooh they look lovely New Shoot.

Am also off the starting blocks with Ailsa Craig and Rijnsburger sown. Can't find my LRF seeds though, means I need to tidy the bedroom!  :D

Oooooh New Shoot, even Mr Sunny is a tad envious. He knows ours were sown three days after yours so is now expecting signs of life by Wednesday or Thursday

I thought a few more piccies might help this year.

We got a few posts last year asking if onion seedlings were OK as they were so weedy.  Generally yes, that's how they are, but I think its reassuring to see other people have the same as you  :)

First year growing from seed this year.
I see lots of people sown theirs already but I only have an unheated greenhouse to grow mine. Am I bound to fail if I sow now? I'm not growing for exhibition just to eat

Mine are inside on the kitchen windowsill for now.  I transfer them to a mini 4 tier plastic greenhouse inside an unheated greenhouse, but I am a lot further south than you and my greenhouse is in a sheltered spot.  Wait for someone more local to you for proper advice, but I would guess you would be better holding fire for now  :)
