Why aren't they going red!!!!!!
« on: July 23, 2015, 21:36 »

Seems like they have been like this for ages! Am I being impatient? Anything I should be doing?

Picked my first tom today...2 weeks behind average first picking time. I know everything is behind this year but I'm getting some excellent yields.

How long do they stay like this? It is my first time growing tomatoes and I really identify with the desperate plea in this thread! All mine are smallish (tiny through to medium) and green and have been like that for weeks...

They look like they are going to do something fairly soon Benny.  The fruit start as very dark green all over, then they gradually lighten in colour before going red.

You can be harvesting tomatoes late into the summer and early autumn, so plenty of time yet.  The last few can even be ripened inside on the windowsill if need be.

What type are you growing Flowertot?  Medium might be as big as they get depending on the variety.

We are running behind this year, but as long as the fruit in on there and the plants are looking OK, I wouldn't worry.  The first bite of a homegrown, sun ripened tomato will be a moment to savour.  They are nothing like anything you can buy, even the premium supermarket offerings can't hold a candle to them  :D

I am growing Tigerella, Moneymaker and some cherry tomatoes.  They look similar to Benny's so you have given me hope  :)

Even though I've tried several other varieties, I always include Red Alert as they are always the first to ripen, usually before the end of July.

Not this year though - mainly dull weather and outdoor temperatures have struggled to get above the late teens for the past few days, and it looks like staying that way for some time to come - not helpful.  :nowink:

They'll ripen when they're ready, but I'm ready NOW!!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I had my first 4 cherry toms 2 days ago.  But yes, it does seem to take forever for them to ripen.  We are just impatient, aren't we? LOL

Two more ripe GD's this morning. They win the CQ award for first to ripen.  I cooked them with my home made breakfast sossies  :tongue2:

I've chucked a few mouldy bananas in the GH to try and give the tom's a push...( instead I'll probably introduce Banana-silvering thrips into my GH and from there the rest of the UK! )  ;)

My earliest tomatoes are always Blooody Butcher and the first of those were ripe yesterday, 2 weeks later than average. Lots to come though.
