growing pots
« on: March 11, 2015, 19:49 »
I've sown some sweetcorn in some 'cardboardy' growing pots and put them in a windowsill propagator. Today  I noticed that there is mould growing on the outside of the pots and some of them have mould on the compost. I   know heat and moisture are ideal conditions for mould .  Will this affect germination and any seedlings?

What should I do?

Shouldn't think there's much you can do Hadakre. I'd just let things go and see what happens.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

'cardboardy' growing pots
Loo rolls or kitchen paper towel rolls?

Mould growing on them is common, something to do with the glue I think. It won't hurt the plants.

Mould aside - you're very early with that sweetcorn if it's not destined for something like a polytunnel. You dare not plant it outside until any risk of frost is past. This means that even down here in the mild (cough) Midlands climate that it will be another 4 weeks before I even think about sowing it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just wanted to add that I grow sweet peas and garden peas in halved toilet roll tubes with major success.  Then they can just be "plonked" straight into the garden when ready.  And the cardboard does go a bit mouldy but it hasn't affected the seeds (so far).  And the reason i start peas off this way, rather than sowing them straight into the ground, is that the mice around here love them!  :(
