Drooping rose bush
« on: October 15, 2014, 17:58 »
Help! My newly planted floribuna rose bush is drooping. It is a 'You're Beautiful' rose that came in a pot with lots of blooms on it. I planted it 3 days ago. We have had a lot of rain so I've not given it extra water aside from prior to and just after planting. Could that be the problem or has it gone into shock?

What should I do?

I suppose the weather has been a shock, if it was kept under cover at the nursery before posting, or in the warm at the couriers depot

It may well drop flowers and leaves before it adjusts.

Next time harden off slowly before planting out.

Hm! This sounds like a typical case of when transferring the rose to the planting hole, you knocked it out of the pot and the soil ball fell away taking much of the fragile root system with it. That happened to me once when I was a novice. You need to be very careful when removing the soil ball from a pot grown rose.

If that is the case there is little you can do now. I'd cut it back by half and ensure the soil around the planted rose remains damp but not soaked. Next Feb give it a harder prune, but it will need to make a new root system so don't expect it to grow that well until the second half of the year...if it survives

Actually I managed to keep the soil ball intact so I don't think that's the reason although it has been very windy here so I guess it could have got rocked if I didn't firm it in well enough. I stood it outside for a couple of days before I planted it out but the weather has been awful. Poor rose!

The wind will evaporate the moisture from it, try giving it some protection from the wind, I'd prune it to reduce surface area.

It hasn't gone into a spot where a rose was previously growing, has it?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

No, no roses there before. Will see how she's looking in a bit when the sun comes up.
