Cat in my garden
« on: July 17, 2014, 11:39 »
I know they won't hurt my hens but they don't half make a din at 6am....
I've done my best to cat proof the garden but they still get in.  I heard garlic granules work well.... a sachet of them hung on the fence where they get in perhaps?

The council say our walls can be only 6' high and mine is already much higher..
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

A modern high powered water pistol well aimed should convince them that youy garden is off limits.

Cheers,   Tony.

I having much the same problem at the minute so just came on the symthasise.

Onc of our local cats keeps trying to go for my little bantams!

They keep chasing my cat as well so she's starting to be a bit afraid of going out.  My cat on the other hand (although a hunter) has shown no interest in the chickens which is why I was so surprised that another cat would.

Hannah :)

you can buy battery operated ultra sonic cat scarers although that is not what you want if you have your own cat.
Please remember that if a cat can get in the so could a determined/hungry fox  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Yes that 's a good point!  The cat raids the bird's nests and hangs around outside the coop - hens safely inside.
Will be inventive - will let you know what I come up with!

Saw online someone puts chopsticks upright in their flower borders so cats can't squat down there.

Water pistol works brilliantly. Had a neighbour with 6 cats who would not come into my garden once they learnt...very quickly.
Might  be useful to keep chooks in the run unless you are there outside,

I've had spikes put up on our wall for my rabbit's protection in the previous property. It worked with all cats but one tom cat didn't bother and the spikes really have been unpleasant even when fixing them.

I don't think garlic will di the trick. I had cats for years, they loved to sleep in my dad's wild garlic at the pond.

The watergun is certainly the best idea. That worked well with the tom cat.

Besides that you could try this anti vandalism paint. Cat's dont like sticky, greasy surfaces a lot and it makes it more difficult to get hold. Do you know if the cat jumps up the wall or having some "steps" from outside, maybe a neighbour's shed ir cars parked near to the wall?

Good luck with it!

Went out with my secateurs and cut some lengths of rosebush stem - long and prickly.  It's now at the top of my fence and less inviting to jump over... lets see...

A cat at 6am Grrrr!
I went and found nature's barbed wire - much worse than rosebush stems its a particularly nasty bramble.  Cut a few lengths and took the leaves off.  Did some 'folk art' with it all over my fence.  Cut shorts lengths and wove it in - hope this does it!!!!!

Hopefully it works. If not, let me know. I'll send my 20 months old terrorist, believe me, the cat will not dare to return once it was tortured by his opera high volume voice... (I wouldn't, if I had this option).

Besides that, shattered glass wipl work, if the bramble still is not mean enough. Maybe you can fix it with silicone on top of the fence.

Good luck!

Definitely one of those high-powered water machine gun affairs you can get for grown-ups who weren't allowed a water pistol when they were a kid. Works a treat and is VERY satisfying.

I don't think it is legal to use broken glass on the top of a boundary, in case a burglar gets cut   >:(

If complaints, tell them a terrorist has forced you to do it...   ::)

It is such a popular word at the moment  :(  and at least you won't be blamed.
