feeding leeks
« on: May 13, 2014, 19:58 »
I have leeks in a large deep container I am thinking they might need a feed to bring them on.  I think I started them in January. Am I right in thinking they like a tomato feed.  Is it June when they get planted into the soil.

I had a tray, about 3in deep of Cairngorm leeks that came on well then started to turn a little yellow and I was thinking they could be lost. I tried a very weak solution of Phostrogen and another about two weeks later and now they have really picked up, thankfully.

I'll leave them until big enough to handle comfortably before planting out, but will cover in fleece to deter Leek Moth as this certainly helped last year.

Tomato feed not really a good idea, as you don't want them to flower - any general fertiliser like Blood Fish and Bone,  Growmore (Wilko do a liquid one) is ok.

You can plant them out as soon as you want to, they usually have to wait for another crop to be harvested first - but if you already have room then go for it  :)

I gave mine a feed of nettle tea recently and they don't seem to have objected :tongue2:

When mine have germinated and got at least 2 leaves, I give them a dilute feed, then another one about 2-3 weeks later on just before I pot them on from their tray into 6" pots with 9 per pot. They get another one just before planting out later on.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
