potato fertilising
« on: May 05, 2014, 13:48 »
My rocket spuds in tubs have flowers on but not yet open. Ive had the obligatory furtle and found quite a lot of marble sized ones not far under the surface. Its quite a big tub so I cant get right down in without causing damage so im thinking maybe I should leave them another couple of weeks and perhaps give them a boost of something instant but not sure. They were planted on 16th feb and kept in polytunnel until a couple of weeks ago. Any suggestions?

Hi Steve. I'd be interested in replies you get because I'm at the same stage as you and was just thinking that I need to add something to the potato bags.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Hi Yana. I suspect that one response will be that there should still be enough nutrients in the soil from potting up if it was done correctly. Although I did give them a soaking of miracle gro a couple of weeks back. I will be keeping them well watered especially as it has been sunny and breezy today.

When the flowers open give them a good watering, but do not feed. Feeding at this stage will only benefit the top growth which has already done it,s job.

None of my earlies in the greenhouse have flowered but I've been lifting (and enjoying) them for over a week now.

Rocket should give you a usable crop after 10 weeks so I'd be inclined to tip out a tub and savour the delights of fresh new potatoes.

Curiosity is going to get the better of me, I know that. Might have a little look later today.  :D
