Peas - which variety is the sweetest?
« on: April 05, 2014, 17:51 »
Hi...am wondering which pea variety to grow this year after last years disaster lol. I've read somewhere that the wrinkled peas are sweeter than the round ones? I'd like to grow a very sweet pea that doesn't get too high. Could anyone recommend a particular variety? Also last year I had a nightmare with pea moth maggots, would the best thing to do be to cover with mesh?

Thank you  :)

You could try Serpette Guilloteau from the Real Seed co,

There is no such difference by seed. I think the wrinkled ones are early, the smooth seeds summer varieties.

There are plenty of sweet peas out there, experiment, what you like as tastes are different.

The moth can be avoided by early or late sowings.

I like "Charmette" from realseeds-for me it's very sweet. It's a dwarf petit pois, needs very little support if you grow it in blocks and is easy to cover with netting (I use debris netting as I have some spare from a brassica cage).

As soon as you pick peas the sugar gets converted to starch so you need to eat them as soon as possible after picking for maximum sweetness, which personally I don't find too hard!
