Is there a variety of peas I can sow this late
« on: July 10, 2010, 11:38 »
I have some space in my little plot after clearing some earlier veg and wondered if it was still possible to sow any peas. Never done peas before so not sure about what and when.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

Any variety of early peas are OK to go in now, for example, Early Onward.  Its certainly worth sowing now, but later plantings can tend to succumb to powdery mildew.  Keep an eye out for that, and get a milk spray ready just in case it happens

I sowed peas last week and they are all coming up. The ones I started on a windowsill and nurtured lovingly back in March are barely three inches tall.

Which just goes to show . . .
The idiots are winning.

Chuck 'em in, there's still time just.

I did 2 x 32' rows of Kelvedon Wonder on 2nd July. They were through on the 5th and are now 2" tall.  Don't let them dry out though & as Poddy says, look out for mildew which late sown peas are prone to.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I was beginning to wonder whether peas were worth the effort, after lovingly caring for them, picking and podding about 2 metres worth of peas (which were just about enough for two of us for dinner!) for what seemed like hours, but nothing compares to the taste of homegrown peas picked and on the table within an hour or two - sublime.

I'm off out to sow some more tomorrow  :D
