Biting the bullet.
« on: March 29, 2014, 09:20 »
The weather has been predicted to pick up, so I'm going to go mad and plant some Kestrel out into containers. If we get a cold snap, I can always bring them into the GH. I put some into a raised bed at this time last year and they did ok, but took a lot longer than normal to get to harvesting proportions. Also going to get some onion sets out. Am I barmy?

i put new potato's in the tunnel 3 weeks ago, they're just starting to come through this week. put all my potato's in last weekend. don't think we'll have prolonged frosts now so shouldn't be a problem as long as there's enough soil on them to protect them.

my onions went in a couple of weeks ago, they're covered in fleece when frost is forecast.

I planted most of my spuds 2 weeks ago and the rest will go in tomorrow. The containers and beds have all been covered with fleece which I have taken off this morning as we're in for a nice weekend.

Some of the Desiree in the 30L pots are starting to show through already.

Any sign of a cold snap and I'll cover them up again.

I think you'll be OK planting them now.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

All my spuds went in today. You are balancing risk of frost with risk of blight later in season.
Be prepared to cover if frost comes but you have to put the spuds in sometime soon

Will put my few in tomorrow then. The chits are a bit short but I'd rather not risk blight as I have still not succeeded in raising potatoes yet.  2 yrs blight and 1 yr blackleg out of my 3 years of growing!

Not all spuds have long chits, and if they're too long then they risk breaking off anyway.

The main aim of chitting is to break the dormancy of the tuber.

If you've got chits, no matter how small, you've achieved that objective.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Earlies went in sacks 2 weeks ago, (and are through), 2nd earlies last week and mains yesterday. Fleece has been used and remains on standby at the mo'. So, get them in, I say lol. I've just planted out my first cucumber in GH, although I might be pushing my luck!

Thanks DD.  I needn't have worried then.
