compost bin......clouds of whitefly
« on: March 31, 2014, 17:38 »
You can guess what happened I suppose....they overwintered in my compost bins ,mild winter, open up the lid of the plastic compost bin and WHOOSH!!!  it was like an explosion, millions of rather large looking whitefly crowded out.
Have any of you come across this before? What did you do?

First I left the lid off in the hope the birds would help out.
Then I left in on in the hope they would die on one of those nice warm  days we had.The bins are black,I hoped they would get to warm for them to survive.

No joy.My greenhouse is right next to the bins.

Any ideas on how to get rid if so many of the darned things ?

I don't do anything. I just leave the lid off for a bit and then go back when they've cleared off. You should expect insects and animal life of all kinds to gravitate towards your bin. It's all part of the process of composting. Without this activity you'd have a lifeless pile of nothing in there

Sounds like my Dalek bin. I left the lid off while I was at the plot and they disappeared!  :)

You can always find a little job to do while you're waiting for the insects to do a disappearing act  :)

If they're in the bin, they're not on my brassicas!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
