seed starting to Germinate
« on: February 21, 2014, 19:46 »
We have some propagators currently filling Mrs. Bloods windowsill and by some trick of fate they are starting to germinate.

Cabbage, Sprouts, Cauliflower and what not... however they do seem to be fairly long and spindly! they have only been up for a couple or three days....... how long should I leave them before putting them into pots?

Cheers

I would always wait until the first true leaves have grown, rather than the first 'seedling' leaves and if they are spindly as they probably are, plant 'em deep when you do transplant.  I need to do my chillis tomorrow as they are getting too long but do have their second set of leaves.

I'm sorry to give direct, but you'll be best off throwing those away and starting again. Brassicas are cold weather plants and I always say that they should never go near a propagator. At the most they only need gentle warmth. Most seeds once germinated need to.come out of a propagator or the lid taken off immediately. It's going to be far easier to resow than attempt to rescue them. I trust the seed packet didn't tell you to use a propagator!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
