How big were the patches that you planted up this way NS ?
and please can you give me some idea of spacing/number of plants?

They were both about 5m wide x 3m deep.  I had less sweetcorn and squashed in some Huauzontle in one, but the pure 3 sisters one had 12 sweetcorn, 4 bean wigwams of 6 canes each and 2 trailing squashes.  The wigwams has 2 beans growing up each cane.  There were climbing Borlotti on 2 wigwams and Cherokee Trail of Tears on the other 2.

It looked like this on the ground.

Bean wigwam                   Sweetcorn x 4 in a row               Bean wigwam

Trailing squash                 Sweetcorn x 4 in a row              Trailing squash

Bean wigwam                   Sweetcorn x 4 in a row               Bean wigwam

Werked for me  :)

Exactly what I did  :)

I think it's important to remember that the Indians who developed the 3 sisters idea were growing maize not sweetcorn as well as beans for drying.

Thank you New Shoot  :)

Hope it works as well for you  :D

I think it's important to remember that the Indians who developed the 3 sisters idea were growing maize not sweetcorn as well as beans for drying.

That's why my bed was wide but not too deep.  I wanted to be able to reach in for the sweetcorn without having to negotiate the tendrils of the squash  ;)  :)

Good point though  :)  And a MoS said earlier, pick your squash carefully.  You don't want a monster that is going to strangle and shade out everything else.
