Leeks starting to germinate - what next
« on: January 22, 2013, 12:45 »
Probably another silly newbie question.

I planted some leek seeds at home in a propagator Sunday before last and they are starting to germinate now.

I know some of you suggested leaving the sowing til March but the packet said sow from January so I had a go  ::)

What do i do with them now that they are starting to show through, about half an inch high? Do I water them frequently or just leave them as is?

Thanks
Jim

Take them out of the propagator and get them somewhere light and cool, otherwise you're going to end up with weak and leggy seedlings.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I really am starting to feel a bit silly with all these questions I ask, but here's another one:  ???

The leek seedlings have started to come up pretty well. I have them on the kitchen window ledge as you can see here:

Do I just leave them by the window for now or move them out of the light? I haven't really watered them that much either as I'm not sure if I should or not.  ???

Any help at all about how to look after them will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

Ain't got any real advice for you sorry RookieJim, but just wanted to say good luck.  I've been put off attempting to grow leeks as I hear it's difficult but I think I'll give it a go this year.

How far down those tubes are the seeds?  If they're in the top quarter I'd probably give them about a dessert spoon or even a table spoon of water each every 3 or 4 days or until the compost looks really dry.

Growing leeks is not difficult.

I think we're about due a link to my way of dong it:

Rookie Jim:

Those seedlings really don't want to be in a house, it's far too warm for leek seedlings. They could do with being in frost free frame, or greenhouse. Do you have anything like that?

Unless you've anywhere suitable, then you're a bit early with the sowing. I do have a frost free greenhouse, but still won't be sowing mine until March.

I would avoid the propagator as it will probably be too warm.

I have had little success with germination outdoors, so might be tempted to start them off in a cool place indoors before putting them outdoors after germination.  They don't need mollycoddling  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'm with Yorkie.

Use propagators sparingly. I've managed over 40 years without one!

Yours are 3 to 4 times bigger then mine, about 15-20 of my Blue Solaise have germinated and not one of the Musselborough.

Hopefully this year I will get something bigger then thin spring onion size that was all that came up last year.

They've really come on since that pic.  I just worry that I've started them way too early. The pack did say sow from January, so I did

Still don't know what to do with them
