Yesterday, dug up half the shallots (going a bit soft in the neck) and tied up the last of the toms. Made a home-made fly trap from a plastic water bottle with chicken poop for bait. Works a treat (unsurprisingly).

This morning so far: hoped to do some planting out but still far too windy for plants to survive. So cut down some weeds (could have shouted "timberrrr" for a few of them, they were so thick and tall) instead and gave everything a good watering. Am now about to go and tie up some sprouts and pepper plants.

Edited to add: didn't tie up the sprouts and pepper plants. Dug up half the Charlottes instead. They're so big they're busting out of the ground and starting to go green, so I thought I'd better dig them up. I have no idea what we're going to do with so many potatoes. These past few years, I've bought maybe 40 kg of potatoes a year (Mr Snoop likes bread and I like rice). But I've picked more than that already and I've still got half the Charlotttes and all of the Picassos (main cop) to go. This is my first successful attempt at growing potatoes and I'm a bit outfaced to tell the truth.

first trip to the plots for about 4 weeks, what with the weather, work and having to build a conservatory base, not too bad, but weeds as expected, also potatoes look like some need to be started digging up, so tidying to be done - today was supposed to be dry here, but everything is still sopping wet, tomorrow rain is forecast, so it looks like the weeds get a weeks reprieve.

Popped up to collect a lovely harvest including my first cucumber, sweet pepper, reddened chilli, and large beefsteak tomato. Also cut off old dying halums that could be early blight or just old age ... they were earlies/2nd earlies planted on 17 March so all is cool. The small maincrop I have seems to be just about ok.
Unusually dull, and rain was forecast today, but the maps had the look of fizzling out to nothing of any use, and so it is proving, just like most rain bands have this year down here.
So, up tomorrow morning bright and breezy at 5 o'clock, and will give the whole plot, especially outdoor tomatoes, beans and sweet corn, a well needed proper soaking under the early rising sun, as it looks like next to nothing wet will be falling here well into next week either. I'm loving this Summer.

Watered and mourned the loss of five of my 20 autumn and winter cabbages (broken at ground level, no idea by what) and of two of my sweetcorn plants (definitely dogs). Picked more courgettes and picked over the toms looking for tomato fruitworm eggs. One tomato down but a few clutches of eggs squished.

Couple of hours today. Finally got a new area dug over ready for plants/seeds. Hoed all the other beds and then sown 3 rows of Carrots. Strimmed all the paths and just before I came home picked a large bunch of Sweet peas.

Yes, some of my land is so compacted you'd think the Panzer Division had rolled over it.

Made a version of a lasagne bed for the brassicas, supervised hubby digging spuds, then planted out another 83 leeks at the end of the squash bed.

This morning - finally got around to weeding the beetroot bed, and bought the shallots home to dry on the garden table

Tonight - watering, watering, and more watering and then trying to retrain the pumpkins to go where I want them, so we can still walk down the paths.
