Sprout disease!
« on: November 12, 2013, 19:08 »
My sprouts that I have been nurturing all summer and are getting to the point of being ready for harvest have developed what looks like a fungal disease. Can anyone advise what is may be and if there is a something I can treat them with before I loose the lot. Most still have some growing to do yet. See below.......

You will probably have to go to my gallery to see the pictures in a decent size (unless you have a magnifying glass). I don't seem to be able to attach them on here in that way.

The photos won't enlarge, so I can't see what's wrong with the plants  :(

Yes MoS I just edited in that point. How do I attach them so they will enlarge?

Thanks for your help.

Looks like whitefly to me.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The bottom one looks like whitefly damage caused by their poo. Are the black marks sooty, and so sort of wipe off? If so, the definitely whitefly. Sprouts still edible but need a good scrub and outer leaves removed.  Whitefly sap the strength out of the plant and so could also be the reason for the tops being an odd colour.

The damage aside being a clue, I've circled three other big clues!

There are lots more.

Aso I wanted to point out that the tops are not just discoloured, but are soft and mouldy...very mushy when you touch them. Would this also be the result of the white fly? Is it too late to treat now?

Yep, whitefly. Got the same myself. Have been fighting them with soap/oil solution for weeks and no joy. I took the tops off, and fed the plants with some blood fish and bone to try to help them. Apart from the sprouts looking yukky all's well  :D
