tilted head?
« on: July 20, 2013, 13:19 »
My chook is wondering around the garden with her head tilted to one side ! She's eating & drinking as normal, tail up and walking ok.
Is this normal chook behaviour?
Keep calm & talk to chickens :)

Is it tilted all the time??/  Chickens (and ducks) will tilt their heads if they hear a strange or unusual noise.  Try standing near them and making clicking noises with your tongue  and you will see them do it.  If it is tilted all the time then I am not experirnce enough to say what it is!!

If it is tilted backwards, it is sometimes called star gazing, and I think it's to do with the neuro system.  If Joyfull is online later, she will tell you a bit more as I think she had a hen like that, oh and so did Oliveview.  So perhaps sideways tilting, if she is doing it all the time as if she is stuck in that position, is the same sort of problem?

You could have a costly visit to the vet, but if she is healthy, eating and drinking and no other problems, I'd let her get on an enjoy life.

We had a chick like that once, but she could only walk backward round the brooder shed.  She only lived a couple of months, so she obviously wasn't meant to live a long and happy life.

Yes her head is slightly back. She is eating & drinking, scratching etc. Gives a little shake every now & then. She hasn't laid since Fri . See how she goes later when she free ranging after the grass is cut.

They can get ear mites which would cause them to shake their heads more than normal.  Not sure if it would explain the tilted head though.

there are a few reasons for star gazing (sometimes also called moon gazing),
one is a neurological - from which there is no known cure,
another a lack of Vitamin E or B - this is easily rectified by buying a good vitamin tonic which contains vitamins E and B to put in their water (look in the pigeon section of your pet shop).
Also contaminated crops can be the cause.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Off to the vets :-( its as if she has gone mad. Not knowing how to get in the hen house, how to get out, where to lay her eggs. Head is really tilted, not eating barely drinking. I feel frustrated too. Its the 2nd sick chooks in5 months. Started to think im doing something wrong :-( but have followed the guidance
