Onion problem - any help please
« on: July 20, 2013, 08:34 »
I've planted heat treated onions this year - both red and white. They have looked to be doing really well. However I've just been weeding around them and there seems to be a problem. They feel spongy both in the body and stem. I've got them in 2 totally separate areas and both are the same.

Is this part of their normal development or is this a problem.

Regards, WG :(

They sound ok but sometimes onions get a bit of root rot,i think youd maybe have pulled one up with the weeds if you had it though. If their still looking green and healthy id leave them alone.
you can sometimes get the odd few with a wide fleshy neck on them as well.

Spongy in the stem with a wide neck would mean they need to be used first, but I don't like the sound of their body being spongy. Have you over-watered them? Try pulling one up and examining the bulb for mould, fungus, etc. Hopefully they are ok.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
