onion problem
« on: March 06, 2012, 16:55 »
Planted 50 Onion sets in Autumn which seemed to be doing ok but on inspection a couple of weeks ago it looked like they were rotting away. Ive pulled a couple up today and dont see a bulb/set at all now just a stem which looks quite healthy. Will anything come of them or should I cut my losses and plant again.

thanks
R.I.P Bobby Smiler Smith......love you always little fella.

Sounds like they might be waterlogged but it they are healthy leave them and see what happens.. Mine are on the roof still so will look at them later today!! Not inspected them lately..  the bulb will turn into a straight shaped stalk then it will continue to grow and bulb properly later on..  I normally start to pick mine on 1st may each year and have them as green like leeks in white sauce.. and for cooking where the whole onion, greens and all are used..

If they have a healthy root system they should be OK. If no roots then perhaps not.
