How do your strawberries taste this year?
« on: July 02, 2013, 09:50 »
Our strawberries are probably the biggest I've ever seen them this year and there are loads on each plant. The variety is Marshmello. The age of the plants range from 1 year to 4 years old and there's a 30ft row for each year (i.e. 4 rows, 1 row is 1 year old, 1 row is two years, 1 row is 3 years old and 1 row is 4 years old).

Something I've noticed this year is that the taste is no where near as good as previous years. Is anyone else fiinding this? Be honest  :)

Also something else I've noticed is that the biggest strawberries are on the younger plants. I've never seen or noticed this in previous years.

PS: Sorry if this is in the wrong place mods. I couldn't decide on Chatting or Grow Your Own.

The first few were ok not great but after a good water one evening they have come on fine. We have a mix of beds, five in total but to be honest five is too many and we are finding its a bit like death by strawberry.

I hAve just done our third batch of jam, and we have given so many away its madness, but taste wise everyone is biting our arm off to get a free bowl so they must like them too.

We have cambridge favourite and another but for the life of my i cant remember what the variety is called

My OH has made most of ours in to jam so we'll have to wait to see how that turns out. Strangely my OH's sister has been asking if we can spare some more strawberries as she "loves them" so I can only think it's my taste buds that are broken this year  ???

I am with you on this one Ryetek. I have had large - but not that tasty strawberries so far but have only just started picking. I have red gauntlet and elsanta , which in hind sight were probably not the best ones to choose for taste I guess ? - but you know how it is - you get given things and you feel and obligation to grow them .  I think this year might be down to the weather as well as the plant have grown really well - but probably too muck lush green growth at the expense of taste.

Mine are unusally lovely. I am not a big strawberry fan (I know, I know :nowink:), but can't stop eating them this year. :)

Of the few that have ripened thus far, lots of bitter tasting ones I'm afraid :( not enough sun to go around. I'm trying leaving them on the plant as long as possible, as some of the shop bought ones are tasting sweeter at this point.

My year 2s are just now starting to ripen and they're coated in big fat strawberries, so looking forward to trying them and fingers crossed they're sweet!

My first one was absolutely tasteless, I put it down to it being in a container and forgetting to feed them. I will remember in future

Mine are also quite bland but I'm not sure if they were ever good because I inherited them, I thought that they must be a modern supersweet but tasteless variet, they really lack that smell too

Seems like it's a bit of a mixed bag then. We've only just started picking ours so they may get better. However at this point I'm convinced they are not as tasty as in previous years.
