still worried about potatoes
« on: June 29, 2013, 10:36 »
Fed the potatoes to try and give them a boost.  The main crop seem to look better.  The first earliest are winston. They were well chitted foliage is small and some yellow leaves.   Not sure what to do. Could it be magnesium deficiency that is stunting their growth.   I have read about Epsom salts but how do I make this up.   Other unlikely scenario is they are ready.  The area they are growing in is also having problems with horse tail.  Just not happy with them

Edit to clarify for search purposes.

all I did was fill the watering can and put about 2oz of salts into the can. then watered the pots.
(it was a 200g tub, so I used about 1/4 each can full, got it from boots buy one get one 1/2 price, £1.25 + £0.62)

Epsom salts are soluble, just dissolve a spoon full or two in water and apply.
You could sprinkle a little on the soiul around them them water that in, but it has the same effect.

After that put something that is a slower release arpund them so that what you add now is maintained. A watering with salts from a watering can will get in to them quick but then will drop off hence the addition of something to suppliment with a slower release.

I find they like very fertile soil.
I have done a lot better since we dug in pigeon manure last year.
How are the rest of your crops doing, and when did you last get some manure?

How long have they been in?

Just stick your hand under the soil/compost and see what's there. Old foliage does tend to die so they may well be ready.

Epsom salts watered on (not in bright sunshine or you will burn them) will be absorbed through the leaves. Sprinkled on the soil is not going to do this years crop much good.

Dug up a couple of the very yellow ones watered yesterday with epsom salts.  Only got 3/4 small potatoes from each plant.  Very disappointed winstonvariety.   Wondering if I didn't water enough been very dry until last week.  Left the rest in the ground but foliage very yellow and small
