Algae in Water Tank
« on: June 27, 2013, 20:07 »
I made a stupid mistake at the weekend!

I have a Unitank as a water container on the plot (white plastic 1m x 1 m square).  It is on a timer to water my tomatoes.  I came up with what I thought was a bright idea on Sunday and put half a bottle of tomato food into it and filled it with water so that my tomatoes would get fed while they were being watered.  Went up today and the tank is pure green with Algae.

Has anyone any ideas on how I can get rid of it.  Would scouping out what I can by wrapping it around a cane and then putting some barley straw in work?

The good news is that you are not the only one who has mixed up plant food in a water container, left it and found that it turns the colour of pea soup.....

The bad news is that I have never found a way of cleaning it out, including soaking with strong Jeyes Fluid.  I just use it anyway, but don't mix up so much at once now.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Cover the tank from the sun... or paint it..

It is the sun that makes the algae grow.. I have mine covered with a builders bag slit and wound around it. The tom food will feed the algae so add more to compensate. But 1000lt IBC is a huge tank to feed your toms.. how many do you have?
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

It is a 14ft x 25ft PT, 3 beds each 25 ft long with a soak hose buried in each of them going back to the tank which is on a timer to water for an hour a day. I have approx 30 Toms, 5 Aubs, 5 Cucks, 1 Melon, 10 peppers/chillis, 100+ strawberries and two squash plants + various other bits and pieces all being fed from the IBC.

I will try to get as much of the algae as possible out and chance the barley straw.  I have just found one of the builders bags out in my garage - I will take it with me and wrap it around the IBC and see how I get on.  I will also give the plants a light feed at the weekend just in case the Algae has consumed all the good from the tomato food.

I bought some stuff from B&Q to get rid of the green in the water tank, but not used it yet.  It is supposed to be plant friendly!
