Comfrey - Cold Water Tank 25gal
« on: May 13, 2009, 08:24 »
I have an old Cold Water Tank 25 gallons which I am thinking of using to make Comfrey liquid feed in.

Picture here..

When making Comfrey liquid feed…

Does the container have to be air ?

If I fill the container full of Comfrey leafs how much water should I add to it?

I thinking I will put the leafs inside a hessian sand bag (Wickes 70p) so it does not clog up the tap I will fit to the tank.

When using the comfrey feed how much should I water in down by?

Worried I will use it on the plants and be too strong and or too week.

Does the container have to be air ?

Good question - I didn't know either. I made a small sample in a 2ltr bottle earlier and left the top off to allow fresh air  in and the smell out.

If I fill the container full of Comfrey leafs how much water should I add to it?

You mean fill the sack rather than fill the tank? either way Id just fill the tank. As far as I can gather the water just aids the process of decomposition. If you have too much water, you dilute less - too little and you dilute more.

When using the comfrey feed how much should I water in down by?

Dilute to "tea" colour, Id get the feel for it but just turning the water brown and seeing how the plants react, gradually increasing the strength.

I assume you've read the info page on comfrey?

Oh yes, definitely vent!  Comfrey tea will cross your eyes!   :wacko:Why not start out with lots of water/comfrey leaves, as it's better to have a weak solution than to burn your tender plants.  You can always make it stronger by adding more comfrey!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Well, I think it can all get a bit too scientific at times, this gardening lark!  ???
I fill (ish) a large old resealable paint 'tub' with the leaves, and bash 'em to bits with a house brick! then add water - How much is a guess, but about 2 litres I'd say. Put the lid on and leave to 'soak' for about 3-4 weeks.

When it's stewed to a nice black colour, add in droplets to the watering can, until it looks like 'weak' tea. WARNING! - IT STINKS!!!!!!  :D :D :D

Life begins... On the kitchen windowsill.

Thanks.

I started some last night in the water tank but I am now having seconds thoughts!

I tried some in a 5 litre water bottle about 6 weeks ago. I smelt it last week and thought it was pretty bad! but then last night  I spilt a about a 1/2 a cup full on the greenhouse floor (on purpose) to see how bad it would smell in there!  OMG.
What have I done!

How long will this smell last for?

My plot is in the back garden so I am really not sure about using the Comfrey  feed now! Was hoping to use in the flower beds as well.

I made some last year - never again  :tongue2: - after I had used it I could still smell it on my hands 2 days later. I'm thinking of filling up a super-soaker water pistol with it, then hiding in the bushes to squirt the vandals  ;) would this count as assault?  :nowink:
