Spotty potatoes
« on: June 25, 2013, 17:17 »
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my potatoes?   Rocket earlies, planted in March.  I started digging them up over the past week, and they have been lovely, good size and flavour.  I noticed today so e had black spots and some white patches - but not all plants or leaves.   Pics of both:

Is it maybe lack of nutrients, and if so is it too late now I am digging them up?  I have only got 18 plants, and have dug up 4 so far.

Thanks for any help!

I think it's magnesium deficiency, not blight.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Keep a careful eye on the brown spot's. If they get a whitish mouldy edge to them be ready to cut them down.

So I have my Epsom sAlts, but there seems to be a huge variation in advice on what to do with it.  I plan on using 1tbs salts to one gallon of water, and spray on the leaves.  Is that the best plan?

I did a large spoonful to a can of water and just watered the plants as i would normally

I do not think it is magnesium defficiency.

The black spots may well be early blight. The spots do not cross any veins. Any mould will be on the underside of the leaves.

Late blight, which you should worry about, has black spots which spread across the veins, as picture posted by mumofstig.

The next 48 hours look critical to me. Temperature not falling below 10 deg C and high humidity. It will make everything grow well but could be a blight breeder.

I'm confused!   This is my first year growing veg - new beds in my back garden.  Blight sounds bad, but it seems like its hard to know for sure whether it is or it is not.   And if it is, will I ever know for sure.?   I'll use the Epsom salts, keep digging and eating my spuds while they look good. If they don't look good I won't eat them.  But will I ever know if its blight or not?

If it's blight they will all turn brown/black wet and mouldy looking and eventually collapse  :( If they get that bad strip all the top growth away and leave the potatoes underground for a couple of weeks. After that it should be safe to dig them up. )
