Loganberry and Tayberry advice
« on: June 16, 2013, 14:51 »
I just got a Loganberry and Tayberry plant from Morrisons for £2 each. As I grow raspberry's and other soft fruits I thought the offer was too good to miss. The plants look healthy but still young so perhaps not fruit this year. I have potted them both on as the roots were just about filling the pots.

Will they grow well in containers like my raspberry's ?

I have both growing in the ground, but never tried growing them in pots.  They get pretty huge, so would need a big container.

If you grow raspberries successfully in pots, then well worth a go at £2 each I'd of thought  :)

I've got both Tayberry and Loganberry.

They have thrown canes up 15 -20 ft long ,I would imagine they have a large root system to support  this growth .

I agree they would need very large pots to sustain this growth

If they are not the thornless varieties then get some good gloves. Good heavy leather at least.
The canes get fairly long, usually throwing 2 or 3 canes off a plant, they will form a new plant if the tip touches down onto the ground. Easy way to get more but this means also mean they need to be tied up off the ground all the time as otherwise they multiply fairly quick.

Best description I have read is one has thorns all over it, the other has thorns on the thorns.
Fairly accurate.

Taste good and makes nice pies and jam.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
