soil prep
« on: May 10, 2013, 14:06 »
Hello all, ive made a start on the new plot over the last few days and ive got a bed ready which ive dug the depth of my folk and ive took as much weeds and roots out as i can see, do i need to add anything to the soil before planting carrots, cauliflower, spuds, french peas or are these not a good mix to keep in the same bed ?
this is all very confusing for a beginner like me  must admit though, im realy enjoying having an allotment  :)

Hi ho, Hi ho
It's off to work we go

Hi, It depends on how much room you have and whether you want to adopt a crop rotation plan. (if you didnt know, crop rotation is keeping the same families of plants like brassicas, root veg, legumes (peas n beans), and such growing together in their own beds and rotating the growing bed plan year by year so as to keep the longest time between growing the same veg in the same position) this helps to fend off soil borne diseases and pests specific to veg families. (I hope that made sense)

If your not going to adopt a rotation plan then i guess you could just bung them in together as long as they are not crowding each other.

Some Blood, Fish & Bone or chicken manure pellets would possibly improve the nutritional value of the soil (depending on when the soil was last used and how long its been left farrow i guess)

The only thing i would say is that the carrots would probably fork if the soil they are to be grown in is manured. so BF&B for them i recon.

It is not recommend to grow brassicas on recently manured ground. Certainly do not manure for carrots.

I'm not sure what French peas are!

I'd give it all to the spuds!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It's easy to do and then get confused. Really, you'll lose some but you'll also grow some and then you can EAT it!!!
