compost question
« on: May 04, 2013, 00:18 »
I have bought some Lidl Peat free compost, waiting to use it.Will report back on the results. What vegetables, herbs, salads need peat free compost?
Have been recommended Levingtons M3  compost by a professional grower for using to plant seeds in containers.
Anyone know where I can buy it in London please ?
Thanks

I'd have thought if it is readily available to the public, you are surrounded by DIY barns and garden centres in NW London, so you shouldn't have a problem. Alternatively, you could ask the professional who recommended it to you, where they buy it. :)

Don't know whether you have been influenced by Monty Don in last week's Gardener's World where he advised to pot up into peat-free compost (can't remember what though!)  ::)

Can't think of any property of peat-free that makes it uniquely suited to certain plants - I suspect that MD was none-too-subtly pushing the "save the peat bogs" line, which is no doubt a worthy cause, but it has to be said that some forum members have found problems with certain low-peat or no-peat mixtures (as they have with others, to be fair.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Hi, I bought the lidl compost & found it awful. It was really full of bark & big stones! Some were 2cm big. Managed to grow sone sunflowers in it - I couldn't use it for smaller seeds, i really hope you get a better batch
