French Tarragon
« on: May 03, 2013, 11:49 »
I suspect my French Tarragon may be more "gon" than "tarra" because it didn't look at all happy last summer, so despite covering with a thick mulch over winter I'd be very surprised if it's survived.

Last year was my first attempt, so I don't know when it usually starts re-growing - has anyone seen theirs reappear yet?
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I can't overwinter French tarragon outside, and so have it in a pot that I take into the frost free greenhouse for the winter.

Mine's in a pot and I really didn't expect it to survive the winter - but I have shoots about 5 cm so it looks as if it has - I wouldn't give up yet though....

I'm thinking a big pot for mine when the plants arrive. It may be more temperate down here but we have had some cooler winters just lately.

Hope yours does sprout back JayG - you might just have to wait a bit longer! :)

Mine was in a pot outside all winter and I thought it was dead.  Was turning it out ready to bin when I noticed the tiniest shoots coming from the base.  I'd give it a bit longer yet  :)

I thought mine was gone as well but noticed today some shoots coming through the manure I spread over the herb bed last weekend.  Obviously needed feeding up!

I didn't know it would grow beyond a season outside - thanks for this!  :D

I've never succeeded in getting French tarragon to survive a winter either. Maybe I should try a pot too. Not sure what's the best to do with it in the winter though - do you bring it inside? I do have a tunnel and a cold greenhouse but I don't honestly think either is too much warmer overnight in winter than the great outdoors.

I have a tarragon outside up on the allotment planted  last Spring. After hibernating, it has been producing new shoots for about 10 days now. Looks to be in reasonable condition.

:D I'd think in South Devon your tarragon would grow back.

Tarragon is similar to rosemary in growth habit and can't take a lot of moisture so mulching it isn't a great idea. When I grew it, I always brought the tarragon inside for winter as it's almost tropical in nature.

Hmmm - I'm not sure mine actually got into the habit of growing even during last summer, and has probably now developed the dead parrot habit!

I don't have any growing currently, but in previous years I've had it overwinter outside in the ground. Under normal circumstances I'd expect it to be showing signs by now, but we have had a long winter stretching far into what should have been spring. I reckon there's hope yet, a lot of things are late this year.

If it is any comfort, mine was a bit rubbish last summer as well JayG, but as I tipped it out of the pot and it saw the compost bin, I heard a 'I'm not dead yet'

Thanks for the optimistic replies  :) - I think this calls for a gentle furtle through the mulch, followed by a probe with the trowel, which will probably be followed by digging up the remains, if any, and then a trip to a garden centre, although last year I don't think they were on sale this early in the season.
