Great result, but as mum says "for now", these giant companies have professional lobbyists and they will never give up trying for complete domination, look at the chemicals, if you go into a garden centre now and check all the products there will be two or three manufacturers with most having the same one so beware.

Relative to this petition, if you haven't already, you might want to familiarize yourselfl with Codex Alimentarius HERE and HERE.

Codex Alimentarius!!! Absolutely spot on mate! There was an attempt to force this "trade legislation" on North America back the 1990's, but it was overwhelmingly rejected, with people out on the streets protesting. In Europe it has been secreted into place, with very little if any media coverage.

Codex is most certainly where this push is coming from and the PRML is not alone. Earlier on this year, the EU Directive on Food Supplements (FSD) which effectively reclassified anything with a stated or known medical effect as a pseudo-medicine, came into existence. This of course requires registration and central control, resulting in only larger companies being able to supply due to the overhead of compliance! Exactly the same pattern in the proposed Plant Reproductive Material Law.

The barely hidden hand of both the major pharmaceutical companies and big agricultural and seed stock companies can be seen in both these awful pieces of legislation. Centralised control of both food production and health products, under Napoleonic Law, that is - it is illegal unless legislated legal! It all sounds a little totalitarian to me!

I had an e-mail from the petition people today

This is a translation of it :

Dear *,
with your support we have already achieved a lot: many political parties support our concerns. And the EU-commission has public position on our pressure to the planned seed regulation. On 6. May, the EU-commission published its proposal for new Saatgut-Verordnung. The proposal contains only supposed concessions, which seek to reassure the public.
PS: We will be back next week with a detailed analysis of the proposal .

At least the EU is aware now that people won't take this lying down.

But a close watch must be kept on these things because someone will try to slip another one through as they tried with this past one.

Did we get a "detailed analysis of the proposal"? If so can somebody post a link to it?

The problem with legislation like this is that our parliament will gold-plate it so that its even harder in the UK than other countries.

BTW do they define "commercial"? What about all the people who sell seeds on eBay?

Commercial usually refers to large scale operators like farmers and market gardeners who raise food to sell. Home sales are usually referred to as domestic sales due to the much smaller packets and types of seeds required. eBay sellers most often fall into domestic status but checks are in place to catch those avoiding commercial status.

You can check for these common definitions against what is in the report.
